Day 2: Better Weather, Better Waves, Marathon Heats

Comments Off on Day 2: Better Weather, Better Waves, Marathon Heats

Day Two of the 2015 Pacifico Belmar Pro turned out to exceed everyone’s expectations. This, especially considering the forecast only a few days prior. But that’s Jersey for ya: Expect the unexpected.

While Day One saw stiff wind, sideways rain, a delay due to a lightning frenzy, Day Two ended with perfect blue skies, beaming warm sun, dying winds, and chest/shoulder high bowls. Thanks to a combination of wind swell and a light tickle from surprise pop-up Tropical Storm Henri, the fun bowly waves allowed both the Pacifico Mens Pro and FINS Jr Pro competitors to light it up out there.

By the end of the day 32 Heats were packed in, starting the morning with Heats 5-8 of the Juniors Round of 3, and then Rounds 1, 2 and 3 of the Men’s in their entirety. The fun bowly surf pumped the competitors and the vibe enhancement was certainly visible, and it showed in their surfing. Top shelf high performance surfing happened today at the 18th avenue bowl with most of the day being spent with fun rights peeling off the south end of the competition zone of the 18th avenue jetty with low tide being right in the middle of the day. For most of the day the rights were spent riding into the Northerly winds so many competitors took to the air with several impressive boosts that got cheers from the beach. As impressive as the airs were, there was an equal amount of fins set free and buckets thrown as well.
