We’ve made it through the 2011 Belmar Pro Amateur Event!
Saturday we were lucky enough to have the very last long period chest-shoulder high remnants of “Katia” blow her last breath at us just enough to carry into Sunday’s building chest-shoulder high windswell bowls courtesy of stiff, chilling, straight easterly winds, and the competitors made the best out of the tricky conditions.
Several competitors entered more than one division with more than one person making finals of both their divisions. Most notable was Belmar’s own local Brian Dalton making the finals of both the Mens shortboard and Longboard divisions snagging 4th in shortboard and 2nd in Longboard. Within the last several minutes of the Longboard finals Brian negotiated a left bowl racing across the washing machine-like rip in the middle of the beach and miraculously pulled off a 360/alley-oop-floater type of a maneuver, sticking it cleanly to the screaming cheers of the beach! The score boosted him from 4th at that moment of the heat to 2nd place. …. Who would have thought the maneuver of the day would have been in the Longboard heat?
At day’s end everyone was happy that the waves held up through the weekend despite dismal forecasts. FINS provided the most delicious breakfast sandwiches ever, Vita Coco and Red Bull were handing out drinks, and smiles and laughs were had.
Special Thanks to everyone who pitched in to make this year’s separate Amateur Event a success!
