The traditional Belmar Amateur Weekend that precedes the Foster’s Belmar Pro has got a little different twist this year and that’s really exciting. Our friends at Summertime Surf School have stepped up to organize the Belmar Amateur Teams Tournament for September 4-8.
This is unlike any contest you have ever surfed.
The event will use a team format similar to the National Surf League used a few years back. But the exciting part is that you don’t know which team you’ll be on until just before the event. You could wind up with some hot local pro junior or a Monmouth Count legend. That’s fun factor.
Let’s face it. Surfing is an individual sport and it’s the greatest way to spend any given day. But what if you were surfing for a team? What if you had your teammates pulling for you each wave? What if you could win a tournament championship like any other team sport?
All surfers have to register before September 4. On that evening, at 7 p.m., the Summertime Surf School will hold a “Surfers Draft,”at Stay Gold Café in Belmar to place each surfer on a team. There will be three divisions of teams – 13 and under, 14-17 years old, and over 18. Your 4-man (and woman) team will do battle with other squads in your age division over the weekend. The rules for the weekend will be explained at the Surfers Draft as well.
This event is somewhat mobile, held on the best sandbar in Belmar, to be determined on the first day of the contest. Told you it would be exciting!
